The racially-motivated murder of a young Black man during a civic fireworks display on the Victoria Day holiday weekend in 2001 is a story that should be known in Canadian history. Why is it not? In respect and honour for Howard Joel Munroe, professors Stanley Doyle-Wood and Paul Cross examine the murder in view of historic and contemporary experience through discussion, analysis and a documentary introduction. For educational purposes, and as a resource in anti-racist and social justice study.

Nearly 20 years before our visit, a memorial service is held at the very place where Stan places a candle; at this tree still standing where Joel took his last steps. To our knowledge, this is the only audio recording that exists of the memorial service for Joel, held August 18th 2001. Reverend Winston Thompson officiates. The photocopied hand-written program notes shown in the image below include reference to the tribute to be given later in the ceremony by Dudley Laws of the Black Action Defence Committee. Joel's sister Vanessa reads from scripture; Joel's friends who were with him address the gathering. Listen for the sound of the park maintenance machinery that passes close to the ceremony.
